Ligne Decisive / The Decisive Line

A Tribute Exhibition by Ajay Choudhary
In celebration of Le Corbusier & ATMA Building

November 4th will see the opening of a dynamic exhibition by noted city artist Ajay Choudhary open in Ahmedabad. This exhibition is doubly special as it is housed in the ATMA building, which is amongst Ahmedabad’s architectural gems- a legacy for the city created by master architect Le Corbusier. Choudhary has created large monumental canvases which draw attention to the decisive lines of the building.

The exhibition has been curated by Anupa Mehta Arts & Advisory. Anand Patel & Associates have designed the exhibition display, and the exhibition will be inaugurated by Ms Terzan , the director of the Alliance Francaise, Ahmedabad, and eminent architect Mr. B V Doshi.

Says the artist: “It is a privilege to have engaged so closely with this magnificent building. The ATMA building is an inspiration for me. The curator, Anupa Mehta’s approach has allowed me to extent my boundaries. I hope this exhibition allows people from the city a chance to view the show and the building, and to understand the importance of art and architecture in our lives.”

The exhibition will continue from November 5, 2016 to February 28, 2017.

ABOUT ATMA

Ahmedabad Textile Mill Owners' Association House (ATMA House), is a modern

architecture building in Ahmedabad, India designed by Swiss-French architect Le Corbusier.

Le Corbusier came to India to design Chandigarh in 1951. He was invited to Ahmedabad by

mayor Chinubhai Chimanbhai.

Surottam Hutheesing

association. It was completed in 1954.A ceremonial ramp makes for a grand approach into a

, then president of Ahmedabad Mill

Owners' Association, commissioned Corbusier to build the new headquarters of the

triple height entrance hall, open to the wind. Arrival is on the first floor, where (as per the

original design) the executives’ offices and boardroom are located. The ground floor houses

the work-spaces of the clerks and a separate, single-story canteen at the rear. On the third

floor is a high, top-lit auditorium with a roof canopy and a curved, enclosing wall, in

addition to a generous lobby. The east and west facades are in the form of sun breakers or

brise-soleil, one of Corbusier’s many formal inventions, which, while avoiding harsh sun,

permit visual connection and air movement. While the brise-soleil act as free facades made

of rough shuttered concrete, the north and south sides, built in rough brickwork, are almost

unbroken. On the second floor of the Mill Owners’ building, the lobby is treated as “an

open space defined by harsh, angular forms and the auditorium as an enclosed space

delineated by soft, curvilinear forms ...two contradictory elements that both need the other

in order to exist.”
